Cleaning your keyboard and mouse is essential for maintaining hygiene and ensuring they function correctly. Here’s how to clean them safely:
Cleaning a Keyboard
Tools You’ll Need:
- Microfibre cloth
- Compressed air canister
- Cotton swabs
- Isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher)
- Soft brush (optional)
Steps:
- Unplug the Keyboard:
- If it’s a wired keyboard, unplug it from the computer.
- If it’s wireless, turn it off and remove the batteries.
- Shake Out Debris:
- Hold the keyboard upside down and gently shake it to dislodge crumbs and debris.
- Use Compressed Air:
- Blow air between the keys to remove any dust and particles.
- Remove Keycaps (Optional):
- For mechanical keyboards, you can use a keycap puller to remove the keycaps for deeper cleaning. Keep track of where each key goes.
- Clean the Surface:
- Dampen a microfibre cloth with isopropyl alcohol (not dripping wet) and wipe down the keys and keyboard surface.
- Clean Between Keys:
- Use a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to clean between the keys and other hard-to-reach areas.
- Reassemble and Let Dry:
- If you removed keycaps, reattach them once they’re dry.
- Allow the keyboard to dry completely before plugging it back in or turning it on.
Cleaning a Mouse
Tools You’ll Need:

- Use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol to clean the scroll wheel and its surrounding area.
- Inspect and Clean the Sensor:
- Gently wipe the bottom sensor with a dry cotton swab to ensure accurate tracking.
- Clean Crevices:
- Use a toothpick or cotton swab to remove dirt and grime from seams or grooves.
